Notice to Mariners Sunk Sand VTS
Tuesday 8th May 2007
Previous Event spacer Next Event

To improve the safety of navigation in the Northern Approaches to the Thames Estuary, the International Maritime Organization have approved the modification and extension of the existing Sunk Precautionary Area and the establishment of three TSSs, a two-way traffic route at Long Sand Head, an area to be avoided and a recommended route at the Galloper. These changes will be implemented at 0000 UTC 1 July 2007.

Sunk Sand VTS

I enclose draft publications which I hope will be of interest. You will note that the scheme applies to vessels over 300GT and there are few, if any, restrictions on vessels that are less than 20m in length. I have looked at the charts covering the recreational routes and believe that there is no impedance to vessels leaving Harwich via the Cork Sand yacht beacon or the rivers Crouch, Blackwater and Colne via Long Sand Head en route to Oostende. In fact, I believe that the Sunk VTS scheme will provide a better degree of certainty about where commercial ships are likely to be. In addition there are to be a number of new aids to navigation in the area which can only be useful.

I would be grateful if you could give this wide publicity on your club notice boards.

Kind Regards
